Nevertheless, it was rare for a man to wear a wedding ring following the marriage ceremony until after the Second World War.

Many people have suggested that this was for purely economic reasons and that it is only the relative affluence that many societies now enjoy that has made this practice possible. There is undoubtedly some validity in this argument and it may indeed be a significant reason for men not previously wearing wedding rings, but it is certainly not the only reason.

The significance of wearing a wedding band
Wearing a wedding ring means stating publicly that you are married and, while this has rarely been seen as a problem for women, many men are less than happy to advertise the fact that they are married. This is undoubtedly changing today, but still remains a strong influence for many men, while others simply wear their ring when it suits them and remove it when it does not.

As an interesting aside, men in Greece and Italy are often given "puzzle" wedding rings by their brides. These rings consist of a series of interlocking metal rings that have to be arranged in a set order to form a single ring, which means that the ring cannot be quickly and easily removed or replaced.

For some men the wedding ring is seen as an item of jewelry and wearing a wedding ring is viewed in much the same way as they view wearing a pair of earrings. For many men wearing jewelry is simply something that men do not do and the wedding ring is no exception. Again this is something that is becoming less of a problem over time and, while the wearing of earrings may still be some way off for most men, it is often seen as acceptable for a man to wear a ring, bracelet or a neck chain these days.

Practical considerations for men
In many cases, while a man may not have any particular problem with the idea of wearing a wedding ring, if he has not worn a ring before he may be concerned about whether or not he will feel comfortable with a ring and have questions about whether or not it will feel heavy or will rub. This of course is an easy matter to overcome and all he has to do is buy a cheap ring from his local jewelry store or market and wear if for a while to see.

Of course one genuine problem for many men is their occupation which may exclude them from wearing a ring because of the dangers posed by operating machinery or perhaps for reasons of hygiene. This is course is not something that it confined to the wearing of mens wedding rings and effects women equally.

As time goes by more and more men are adopting the habit of wearing a wedding ring and the signs are that this practice is likely to continue to grow.

About the Contributor:

Donald Saunders is the author of a number of health related publications including: 'Help Me To Sleep - A Guide To Natural Sleep Remedies' and 'Jet Lag - An Alternative Approach'. Hey mister, I hear you're looking for some good rocks. I've got some great stones, really reasonably priced. I'll even throw in the ring for free!"

Sounds shady? You bet he is! Of course

Wedding couples are frustrated. DJs are frustrated. There's a disconnect here. But what exactly is the problem?

It depends on who you ask. DJs continually wonder why brides and grooms treat the mobile DJ -- the type who lugs around his equipment to show up at big events and weddings -- as a commodity. In other words, couples price-shop ruthlessly, as if any given DJ were interchangeable with the rest.

Paul Arnett, a Yorkshire DJ and NADJ (National Association of Disc Jockeys) member who organizes the UK's Mobile DJ Show North event, puts the problem like this: "Well, your average couple spends hours deliberating over the dress. You hand-pick the caterers. You pore over flowers and sweat over the florist. You spend hours choosing just the right venue and church -- not to mention the time spent on favors.'

"But then, you go out and hire a DJ because he's ten dollars cheaper than the next one. Or he's a friend of your brother's, or he does Tuesdays at the local bar. You might never even see him work, check out his equipment, or meet with him personally to make sure he's suitable."

Most couples handle every other major item in their budget differently. You don't choose one venue over another because it costs a hundred dollars less. Few brides with a budget to work with buy their cakes from the discount grocery store, even though that cake (slathered in tubs of "BetterCream" frosting) would be much cheaper than one from the designer bakery downtown. Instead, they investigate. They take pictures. They taste-test amaretto fillings and hors d'oeuvres. And eventually, they settle on the vendor who seems poised to deliver the best experience to their guests.

Why Is It So Different With Wedding DJs?
Part of the answer is an image problem, says Paul. "People perceive that most mobile DJs will turn up fifteen minutes ahead of time, with a couple of speakers and some cheesy circa-1970's light screens, and play 'Agadoo' all night." (For we lucky few who haven't heard it, the 1984 song Agadoo frequently charts as "the worst song of all time.")

We all feel confident identifying an excellent meal or a sublime dessert. But few of us feel comfortable evaluating DJs in the same way. We know that a good one can "get the party started," but we're not sure how to tell a good one from a bad one.

Some people think so poorly of DJs, they prefer to eliminate them entirely, soundtracking the dance portion of the night with iPods or laptops. This isn't easy -- it requires you to rent expensive sound equipment, find someone to mind the iPod, possibly buy insurance, and somehow get around or ignore the technical issues, like the inevitable three second delay between songs you get on an iPod. And yet some people find that preferable to risking the "Agadoo" or "Chicken Dance" scenario on their Big Day.

An iPod might well be better than a bad DJ. But the DJ is a key part of your five-hour reception, and some of them are very good indeed.

When She Was Good, She Was Very Very Good
Perhaps it's hard for the average bride and groom to grasp the difference between a green DJ with low-end equipment, and a seasoned one who knows how to transform shy and retiring Clark Kents into dance floor superheros.

The first may be nothing more than a glorified CD changer. He may or may not have a firm grasp of the different musical needs that accompany standard reception rituals, like the cake cutting or the father/daughter dance. He may lug in his entry-level Peavy subwoofers and arrange his sound system in ways that ignore your venue's peculiarities.

The second may have emceed hundreds of weddings. Along the way, he's developed something subtle but important known as voice and personality -- not an imitation of some radio host's, but his own. He doesn't practice on your wedding; he brings his skills to it, along with a top-of-the-line sound system, which he'll arrange differently depending on factors like whether or not your venue is broken up into several chambers (the cocktail lounge and the banquet area, for example).

If he's a gearhead, he might even offer specialty lighting abilities you might not think of, such as the ability to shine gobos on the dance floor -- gobos being customized templates that display things like your wedding monogram. Some DJs even offer giant video screens and live replays of key points in the reception.

But the most important skills a good DJ will bring to your wedding is a honed personality, a formal-friendly image, and an absolute mastery of what gets crowds on their feet.

Okay, so you get it. You understand that not all DJs are alike, and that a good one brings as much your wedding as any premium florist or baker. So how do you find him?

Choose Wedding DJs that Take Their Job Seriously
Skip the part-timers -- they're still learning the ropes, and they'll be practicing on your wedding. Instead, look for full-timers who show their commitment to the profession by belonging to professional DJ associations such as CPDJA, ADJA, & NAME, or NADJ in the UK.

Paul adds, "Ask if they have public liability insurance (in case Grandma trips over a speaker wire) and PAT electrical test certificates (to insure their equipment is safe). This also shows they're professionals and not cutting corners."

Meet with them in person, and take a gander at their sound systems. You might not know your Geminis or Peaveys from your Mackies or QSCs, but even a casual glance should tell you whether the DJ or company invests in good equipment. In fact, most will be delighted to run you through their top-of-the-line systems if you give them the slightest excuse.

While you're there, take a look at their promotional photos and videos. Are they wearing tuxes? Do they look sharp? Does their sound stage sport garish self-promoting signs, or do they keep things discreet?

Turn on Your X-Ray Vision
Everyone has what it takes to pick a great DJ. You simply have to meet with them in person, and absorb what they have to offer.

Paul says, "Talk to them -- their personality should shine through. While you're there, ask them what special qualities they can bring to their wedding. Ask how they're prepared to work with you to make your day extraordinary."

The DJ should be happy to meet you, seem interested in the specifics of your venue, and ask questions. "Any DJ who seems phased or reluctant by any of this -- they're not the one. If your DJ seems bored, or gives you the sense you'll be just another date on their calendar, they're also not the one."

A Coda for the Wedding Couple
It's true with the cake, it's true with the steak tartar, and it's true for your DJ -- the final word is quality, not price. As Paul puts it, "When you look back on your wedding reception in years to come, do you want to remember what a fantastic time everyone had? Or do you want to say, 'Well, at least we saved some money on the DJ?'"

Good DJs see themselves as part of the larger picture. They expect to work closely with your coordinator, photographer and videographer, and to custom-fit their setup to your venue. So hire a good DJ -- one who can help you tailor the night's entertainment to your individual wedding.

"And see what they can offer to make your wedding function unique," adds Paul.

About the Contributor:

Blake Kritzberg is editor of FavorIdeas. Besides choosing the food menu items for the palette, you also need to think of other factors - could there be potential allergies to certain types of wedding food, will the food arrive on time, and will it taste great? For all these reasons and more, it is very important that you take the time to review the details of providing great cuisine through a responsible and reliable wedding caterer. Ideally, you will find someone who has experience in catering wedding receptions, rehearsal dinners, theme weddings and bridal showers. If the caterer is a custom designer, baker or Chef, they might also help you plan your stunning wedding cake or cake tops. Here are some tips we have found that might help make planning your wedding catering easier than you might think:

1. Meet the Caterer(s) in person with questions.

Many local wedding florists, planners and coordinators know the industry well. Ask them about potential caterers for your event. If you contact a caterer, ask to meet with him or her in person. You will want them to provide references in terms of their abilities and experience. Make you sure you also contact the BBB (Better Business Bureau, bbb.org) to see if they are listed there or are in good standing. Ask your potential caterer about the largest number of guests they can handle and when their last wedding catering took place. Other important details are whether they are insured, have health permits, and whether they are licensed. Without a health permit a caterer cannot provide your wedding food needs.

2. Check to see if a Caterer is included in your wedding package.

Many couples choose to have a destination wedding and find that special place to hold their wedding ceremony and reception. If this is in your plans make sure you check that catering is not included in a wedding package if you chose one. If catering is included, make sure you still ask the appropriate questions.

3. Tasting

Ask about food tasting. Many caterers will allow a tasting in advance of the wedding so that you can choose cuisine that meets your needs. Some charge a fee for this, while others don't allow it at all. Use discretion, and if possible, ask about bringing others to the tasting.

4. Write up a well-detailed contract

A business contract is always necessary in any business transactions and catering is no exception. The contract can be written and signed by you, the contractor and a witness (if possible your fiance or friend) and should include even the smallest of details to ensure there are no misunderstanding as to what is expected by both yourself and the caterer. Assume you will need to put down a deposit.

5. Wedding catering menu ingredients

Ask about the ingredients used in preparing your meal. Are the ingredients high quality, does the caterer bake in-house or order out (especially for bakery and dessert items)? All of this will play a role in pricing out the ultimate professional caterer for your wedding.

6. Inquire about the cancellation policy

Always inquire about the cancellation policy. Read the fine lines in any contract as there may be stiff penalties / taxes involved if you need to change your event date or cancel altogether.

Another suggestion is to put some thought into a backup plan. Although it’s rare and highly unlikely a wedding caterer or catering company would leave you high and dry, stranger things have happened.

In the end, your choice of wedding cuisine should match you and your fiancés personal preference and style. By planning your wedding catering thoroughly and wisely months in advance, one of the most important aspects of you wedding will be thoroughly enjoyed by all. Some of the following outdoor wedding reception ideas should help to get you started with planning this special day, including avoiding some of the dangers involved with an outdoor setting.

One of the great advantages of outdoor wedding receptions is the cost. If you have your own suitable parcel of land, you can save thousands of dollars over the rental of a reception hall. Even renting someone else's private land for the event is generally cheaper than a ballroom.

Hosting an outdoor wedding reception at a public park is not recommended because public parks are just that: public. It can be difficult to control who will and will not end up wandering around eating the hors d'oeuvres. There is plenty of private acreage for rent just about anywhere, quite suitable for a large outdoor wedding reception. This allows you more managed access to the event.

A great thing about the outdoors is that you can have games and entertainment that wouldn't be possible indoors. Outdoor games such as horseshoes and croquet are always a hit and can help to keep the younger guests occupied and out of trouble.

The one thing you simply can't control is the weather. Outdoor wedding receptions are always at risk of being caught up in a storm. Plan for rain, hope for rain, even pray for rain! This way, the worst streak of bad luck will result in a beautiful, sunny day. Set up plenty of sheltered space to ensure adequate coverage from the elements. Even if the weather stays clear, large canopy tents provide your guests with some relief from the sun.

Even when the sky is beautiful, any open space is subject to being hit by gusts of wind. Assume that anything able to blow around, will. Some things to keep in mind are tablecloths, napkins, disposable cups and plates, centerpieces, seating arrangement cards, and SCENTS from trash cans, neighboring pig farms, etc.

Supply bug spray and sunblock for your less-prepared guests. Perhaps a small booth off to one corner of the lot could be dedicated to this task. Citronella candles around the perimeter can also be quite effective in this regard.

Distribute a large number of trash receptacles throughout the outdoor wedding reception area. Guests are more likely to pick up a fluttering plate or napkin when they are near a place to discard it. You will also want hire an attendent whose sole job is to patrol the site and keep things stocked up and litter-free.

Copyright Randy Wilson, All Rights Reserved.

Randy has more articles on wedding information such as Honeymoon Vacation Ideas, Australian Honeymoon Vacations and Games for a Bridal Shower.

Read more from Randy at: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Randy_Wilson

Wedding Date

Contributor: Blake Kritzberg
Blake is editor of FavorIdeas, a great site for ideas on topics as diverse as celebrity wedding news & beach wedding favors

Choosing a Wedding Date -- When You're Feeling Indecisive
He (or she!) asked the question you probably longed for, and fortunately for everyone, you answered 'yes'! Now's the time to bask in the romance, and enjoy the first phase of your new life together. But soon, you'll need a response for that timeless question: "when's the wedding?"

For some couples, it's easy - they know just when they want to tie the knot. For others, it's less clear. After all, you have a lot of options. Even more than you might think, since it's really not necessary to get married on a Saturday. Friday and Sunday afternoons are good choices too, and less expensive.

So if you're looking at the calendar ahead and seeing a hundred alternatives, all about equally attractive, here's how to narrow them down.

Must-have wedding venues
No matter how flexible you are, there's bound to be things you won't compromise on. Maybe it's a particular church, temple and officiant for your ceremony. Maybe it's a special venue for your reception. And there are certain indispensable guests, like your parents.

Luckily for you, putting just these three things together is bound to reduce your choices. Once you call on the church/temple, ceremony venue or reception hall, you'll probably find many dates already filled, especially if you call less than nine months in advance. Good. That makes things easier!

Must-have wedding ambiance
But maybe you don't have a must-have venue. Maybe you just have an image in your mind of the perfect wedding. Maybe it involves falling snow, ermine mantles, a horse-drawn carriage, and a crackling fireplace. Maybe it involves stacks of shiny apples, heaped pumpkins, a scattering of leaves and the scent of cranberry-apple cider. Or delicate pastels, gossamer pashminas for the bridesmaids, and a dove release. In this case your time of year is set: all that's needed it to work out the logistics of venue, local climate and the availability of your most important guests.

Must-have wedding flowers
Some people know exactly what floral arrangements they want at their wedding. Flowers are such an enormous part of the wedding budget, if particular ones are important to you, you might want to arrange your date around them. Unless you're an heiress, for example, you'll want to avoid buying roses for your Valentine's Day wedding. On the other hand, December and January are great months to buy calla lilies. To study flower availability charts, Google for "flower availability by month."

Must-have honeymoons
If you have your heart set on a certain destination, you'll probably find the honeymoon helps set the date for you. Chances are, some dates are good for travel but others involve the risk of hurricanes or lengthy rains.

Limited budget
For now, winter is the slow wedding season. So it's often (though not always) true that you can get a break on expenses by having your ceremony during the holidays. Brides often find that by marrying near Christmas, they benefit from already-decorated churches and don't need to add much themselves.

Plus, if they shop the year before, they can stock up on decorations at incredibly discounted post-holiday sales. The trick is to avoid competing with office parties for reception venues and limousines (New Year's Eve is particularly competitive).

Another factor to consider, besides the possibility of dismal weather, is how many guests are due from out-of-town. Flying in for a holiday wedding can strain any family's Christmas budget, plus airlines often charge extra during the season.

If you need to keep expenses in check but want to avoid winter, make sure you steer clear of proms, graduation, "parents' day" at colleges, major sporting events and other local events.

"Life" dates
You might find your own life gives more guidance than you think. Are you a teacher, with set vacation times? Are you graduating from college or ending an internship? Are many of your relations students, available only during the holidays or the summer? If you're working, is your vacation time limited to a certain time of year?

And if many guests are flying in, will Labor Day weekend or Memorial Day weekend give them time to get acclimated and enjoy your big day? If none of these apply, is there a date that has special significance to you as a couple, such as the date you first met or first dated?

"Auspicious" dates
Many people find little extra dash of comfort in picking auspicious days for their wedding. In India and China, this is standard practice. But even in the West, people often find it reassuring to pick numbers or dates with personal meaning. A Chinese custom is to select a date with as many even numbers as possible (such as 2-18-2006). The Irish believed that New Year's Eve is luckiest for weddings. The Romans (and consequently, modern westerners) favored the month of June. For Victorians, it was lucky to marry on the groom's birthday.

About the contributor:
Blake Kritzberg is editor of FavorIdeas. Do you really know what you are getting yourself into? Are you ready to share a big part of yourself with your future spouse for the rest of your life? Marriage isn't about doing what "you" want. It is about doing what "you both" want.

Are you ready to humble yourself to your spouse when arguments can't seem to get rectified? Are you ready to commit yourself to your spouse through the bad times as well as the good? This is what the nuts and bolts of marriage is all about. No one says marriage was going to be easy. But if you want to stay married for life then you need to be committed and convicted to work at what you started.

Don't be a poor sport and quit the game early. All marriages, and in any condition can be saved with the proper resources. The problem is couples are using the wrong resources to fix their marriage. They don't understand the nuts and bolts of marriage.

During the early years of marriage you might see a handsome prince and a beautiful Cinderella but after going through so many years of behaving selfish and having unresolved issues pop up, your prince might now seem like an ugly old frog and your Cinderella may seem to have turned into a wicked witch. Oh no, now what?

Of course, other people won't see your spouse in the same negative light as you do. But that's marriage for you. Unhealthy marriages don't ever see their spouse in the same positive light as they once did. The reason for this is quite clear. No spirituality to base the marriage upon because the marriage is based upon self-interest. Are you married to yourself? Then go right ahead and continue supporting the marriage upon your ego.

Many marriages of today don't even have a bond to begin with. What seems like connectivity between two people really is lust filled euphoria of the newness of each other, and after while, especially where there is no love, gets humdrum. Marriage needs love to survive.

What does marriage mean to you? Marriage could mean considering the feelings of another and enjoying the companionship of another. It could mean playing the give and take game fairly. Marriage means commitment.

1. Are you ready to consider the feelings of another person? You do want a healthy marriage, don't you? Well… in a healthy marriage, selfishness is non-existence! In a healthy, growing and satisfied marriage, couples do not think in the sense of I, me and mine, but rather in the sense of, we, our, and us. In other words, it is not what "I" want but what "we both want".

2. Are you and your future marriage partner compatible? Don't think you can change the person you married. It doesn’t work like that. How it does work is both wife and husband find the areas in themselves that need changing and work on those areas of self so they can become better marriage partners to each other.

3. Are you willing to compromise with your spouse? A healthy marriage takes a lot of cooperation. There is no room for stubbornness, self-righteous behavior, rebelliousness, or selfishness in marriage. Where are the team players? You can be a great team player "if" you play the game fairly. If you cannot play fair, don’t get married! It's as simple as that.

4. Are you prepared to totally commit to your spouse and stay married for life? I know that NOW you say yes to that question but what does marriage mean to you? Answer that and you will know your answer.

What does your way of life tell you about what's right and good for your marriage? Are you going to value your marriage with the importance that it deserves?

Marriage will be the most important commitment and promise you make with another person. If you think that promise is going to get broken, then don’t even think about getting married, I don't think you qualify.

About the contributor
Angie Lewis is the author of Journey on the Roads Less Traveled, a book about love, life and marriage. Many women dream about the day that the man of their dreams proposes to them and hope that the day will be absolutely perfect in every way imaginable. In a recent study the majority of married women reported that they believe that their spouse spent a significant amount of money on their wedding proposal but that the lack of originality in the proposal had left the women feeling disappointed.

One creative way to propose for a couple involved in a long distance relationship is to plan a surprise visit and set up a scavenger hunt. You could have a friend pick you up from the airport so that your girlfriend doesn't know that you are coming to visit and have the friend give your girlfriend instructions for the scavenger hunt. You could hide a number of small surprises such as candy, flowers and a CD as the first few stops on the scavenger hunt and then hide at the final location poised to propose when your girlfriend completes the game.

An outdoor enthusiast might appreciate a creative proposal during a camping trip. It's a good idea to plan a quiet trip for just you and your girlfriend at a picturesque location. You could hide the ring in your sleeping bag to use in a surprise proposal. When it's time to go to sleep after a long day of hiking and fishing, you could complain that there must be a rock or something underneath you and then pull out the ring and make your proposal. This creative proposal also contains the element of surprise as a camping trip is not a usual proposal location.

Another creative proposal idea is to place an ad in a local newspaper. You could place an outrageous ad in a newspaper asking anyone who was willing to get married to give you a call and include a fictitious phone number. Then when you and your girlfriend are reading the paper together, you could point out the ad as a joke and while she is reading the ad, seize the opportunity to pull out the engagement ring and let her know that you would love to marry her.

Proposing at a sporting event is a creative way to propose to a sports fan. For this proposal idea you could either arrange to have your proposal broadcast over the public address system or displayed on the large screen. If you are really adventurous, you could also contact the team's public relations department and try to make arrangements to make your proposal on the field at halftime. They might be willing to help you stage a scenario where you are either chosen to win a prize or participate in a contest and while you are on the field, they would hand over the microphone to allow you to make your proposal.

Another creative marriage proposal idea is to purchase a book of poems and leave the first few pages intact and carve a heart into the remaining pages and sew the engagement ring to the back of the book. You could suggest taking turns reading the poems on each page and plan to have your girlfriend turn the final complete page to reveal the heart and ring that were hidden inside. This proposal idea is not only creative but also incredibly romantic.

Having the DJ of your girlfriend's favorite radio program ask her if she will marry you is another creative proposal idea. You will want to make sure that you are aware of the exact time that the DJ will be sending your message so that you are able to ensure that you and your girlfriend are listening together when he makes the announcement. You could also arrange to have the DJ play a song that has a special meaning for you as a couple so that you can enjoy a dance together after she accepts your creative proposal.

Another creative way to propose is to include all of your family and friends in the event by inviting them all to a surprise party for your girlfriend. To make this proposal work, you would either convince your girlfriend that you want to have a quiet dinner at home or at a restaurant with just the two of you. Once you arrive at the destination all of the guests will reveal themselves and while all eyes are on the two of you, you could take the opportunity to profess your love and propose.

Still another creative way to propose is to hide the ring in an unexpected location. For example you could pretend to have a clogged sink and while you are working to fix the clog, you could reach into the sink and pull out the engagement ring. When your girlfriend is nearby, you could seize the opportunity to pull out the ring you had hidden earlier and say something to the effect of, "No wonder the sink is clogged, I'll have to find another place to store this ring, how about your finger?" This whimsical proposal is both light-hearted and creative.

A variation on the traditional proposal at an elegant restaurant could be to have the waiter bring out the ring with the bill. You could have a little good natured fun with your girlfriend by going out of your way to drop hints that you would be proposing over dinner. If you keep up the act, she will be expecting your proposal with each course. After dessert you could tell her that you have something very important to ask and as she eagerly awaits your proposal, you could ask an inconsequential question about something completely irrelevant to your relationship. She will probably be furious at this point but her anger won't last as the waiter arrives with the bill and the engagement ring and you let her know how much she means to you.

Finally a creative proposal idea is for the woman to ask the man to marry her, instead of waiting for him to propose. Many women anxiously await the day that the man in their life will propose but why not add your own creative twist by proposing to him instead. The woman is free to propose in any way that she finds truly romantic and can ensure that the proposal is both creative and romantic and that it's a moment that they both will remember for the rest of their lives.

A great marriage proposal doesn't have to be expensive or extravagant. Many women are more likely to cherish the memories of a proposal that was inexpensive but truly creative. The creativity is what makes the proposal so memorable and what makes it a great story to tell their friends.

Masni Rizal Mansor is the publisher for My Wedding Dresses. Avoid Classic Diamond Scams
As you walk along on your quest for the perfect diamond for your mate, you hear, "Pssst! Hey mister, I hear you're looking for some good rocks. I've got some great stones, really reasonably priced. I'll even throw in the ring for free!"

Sounds shady? You bet he is! Of course, you wouldn't really buy a diamond from a guy in an alley wearing a trench, right?

Bet you'd be amazed by how many scams are pulled and in broad daylight by jewelers who seem absolutely honest. Some of them even have beautiful shops that look really hi-tech. Beat them at their own game by learning their scams.

The bigger the better, a lot of people say. When a jeweler tells you that you have a five carat diamond ring, don't get dazzled by the carats. If there was only one stone then you'd have no problem. You might actually be getting a 1 carat diamond surrounded by eight half-carat smaller pieces.

An honest jeweler will tell you the weight of each stone in the ring separate from the center diamond. In fact he'll even give you a certificate from a reputed lab such as the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) as proof. If he can't or won't do these, you're better off buying from someone else.

Then there's the bait and switch. The jewelry store will advertise a diamond at a great price. Problem is that when you get there, they'll tell you that it's already been sold and try to convince you to get another piece instead. Rarely is this case true. Usually there was never such a piece and they'll show you something more expensive that they will try to get you to buy instead.

If the diamond that they announced for sale isn't available, ask for another just like it. If they can't produce another one of the same special quality and price, you are better off walking out the door. Don't let them get your hard earned money.

Normally when you go to a jewelry shop, the gems are lying on a beautiful cloth bed under bright lights. The gems are so white and tempting. Hold it right there! Most diamonds really will look whiter especially under lights that give off a certain blue component. If you really want to check the color of a stone, check it in sunlight. If they refuse, refuse to purchase as well.

You were finally able to find the gem that symbolizes your love. You ask your jeweler t o know make it into a ring so that you can propose to your beloved. He said that you would have to leave it with him for a few weeks and he'll call you when it's ready.

When the ring arrives, it is beautiful but….something about it just doesn't feel right. You can't quite put your finger on it but this doesn't seem to be the diamond that you bought. How can you tell?

The solution is simple: have the diamond checked by an independent gemologist certified by a group such as the GIA. Have them compare it to the certificate of your diamond to confirm that it is a match. After all, no two diamonds are exactly the same. Then you'll know and can demand proper action.

Bottom line, to avoid scams you should take the time to educate yourself about the basics of diamonds. Next you'll need to find a jeweler or gemologist that you can truly trust. Lastly, always ensure that you are given the proper certificate for your gem, one issued by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) or another reputed independent lab. These will save you a whole lot of money and avoid giving you headaches.

About the contributor:
Lesley-Ann Graham runs WeddingTrix.com - a valuable wedding planning resource with articles, tips and advice to help you plan your perfect wedding. Before you begin shopping for that perfect ring, you should know exactly what to expect, what to look for, and the various types of rings that are available. The first part of any engagement ring is the band; there are many different kinds of bands of different sizes, colors, and metals. The gems are just as ranged as the bands, they come in a variety of sizes, weights, cuts, and colors.

The first thought that comes to mind in an engagement ring, is a diamond. Of course, this is the traditional engagement ring; however, it could be any gem the couple chooses, it is all the matter of preference.

Selecting a Engagement Band
When selecting a band there are a few different types of metals you have to choose from, these include:

Gold

Silver

Platinum

Each person has their own preference, some people prefer the traditional gold ring, others prefer the shine that silver or platinum can provide. Gold is perhaps the most popular of all metals when it comes to engagement rings. The gold within a ring is measured in karats. The most popular karat weight of gold is 14 Karats, though you can find gold rings that are 18 Karats and 24 Karats as well. Gold also comes in two colors, yellow or white gold. The drawbacks of gold are that it can bend very easily when worn and tends to lose its shine after a period of time.

Silver or platinum are extremely hard and does not bend as easily. Neither of these are as popular as gold is and typically costs more than gold as well. Platinum is popular because it generally never loses any of its shine nor does it tarnish in any way and is perfect for those that are allergic or sensitive to other metals.

Selecting the Perfect Engagement Ring
Here are a few tips you should consider when you are ready to purchase a ring for that special loved one.

1. If you have already proposed and are ready to purchase the ring, take your loved one with you when selecting a ring. This will allow her to have a choice in the matter and this way you will always have the perfect size and fit.

2. If you are purchasing a ring prior to the proposal, consider retrieving (also known as sneaking) one of the rings she already owns and taking it with you. This will help in making sure the ring will fit on that big day.

3. Furthermore, for surprise rings make sure that you take notice of everything about the love of your life. Take note of the type of rings she wears, small stones, large stones, or none at all. This will help your jeweler make suggestions on the ring you should consider.

Overall, it can seem like a daunting task in picking out that perfect engagement ring. Have fun with it and know that the end results could very well be spending the rest of your life with the one you love.

About the contributor:
Roy Dietelzieg worked in the jewelry industry for 10 years and has been writing about his reflections on jewelry philosophy. That information is outdated and stuffy. Do what will make you and your guests happy. It is a time for fun and celebration, not pomp and ceremony!

Long gone are the days of "assigned" seating arrangements and cookie cutter reception programs. Everyone waiting to be told what to do next. Yawn! Today, you can "have it your way". No, I am not suggesting that "Burger King" host your reception. But, you could, IF you wanted to! That's the message.

To plan for your reception, you need first to know:

* What is your theme?
* What time of day you will be having your wedding ceremony?
* What type of atmosphere do you wish to create?

Answer those three questions and great beach wedding reception ideas will follow.

Perhaps you will marry in a romantic sunrise ceremony followed by a breakfast reception. How about an early afternoon wedding followed by a beach barbeque? Plan fun activities such as a sand castle building contest or a volleyball game. Marry at sunset. Follow the ceremony with a wine and cheese reception and dancing.

The size of your guest list and your budget will also help to determine which path you take.

Beach Wedding Catering
Buffet or food station receptions lend themselves very well to informal beach weddings and are the most fun. They are also cheaper! You can easily coordinate this type of reception yourself and eliminate the added expense of a caterer. Those special women in your family who love to cook would be honored to assist with this project I'll bet. Heck, knowing "Aunt Jo" and "Grandma", they will probably take over and you won't have to worry about a thing!

Formal afternoon weddings will of course lead to the usual "sit down" planned menus. Caterers will be necessary. The advantage being that the whole affair will be tended to without you lifting a finger...for a price. In order to cut costs here, you will have to limit the menu and the guests.

So, if you have a large guest list and a limited budget, avoid marrying late in the afternoon. Guests will be hungry and expect the dinner reception. Instead, stick with a breakfast, brunch or cocktail reception.

Beach Wedding Timing
The wedding industry dictates that a reception should be from three to five hours in length. Rubbish! A reception should be as long as it takes for you and your guests to enjoy each others company and have fun. It can last a couple of hours or all day if you like.

Don't feel obligated to stretch the event out. Often, your older guests tire easily and would like to leave before the designated departure time anyway. If you are having a beach side bash, consider a "come and go" atmosphere. Let people know what time your departure will be so they can be there to send you off.

As far as beach wedding reception ideas go, the rule of thumb is - there is no rule of thumb! Break the mold. Do something different, something fun, something memorable.

Whatever you and your guests will enjoy most, IS the perfect beach wedding reception!

About the contributor:
Cindy English is the publisher of:

Beach-Wedding-Themes.com
Beach wedding themes full of fun, fantasy and romance!

All-Florida-Beach-Weddings.com
Plan your wedding celebration in Paradise!

Copyright 2005 by Cindy English

Wedding button holes

Contibutor: Sue Webb
Sue provides silk wedding button-holes and other silk floral designs through her business, Ace Floral Designs

Buttonholes - Bridal Party
The men wear their buttonholes on the left, Ladies wear buttonholes and corsages on the right (corsages with the tail up).

Key Men for Buttonholes

Groom

Best Man/Woman

Fathers of the Bride & Groom

Ushers

Choosing a buttonhole will depend on the colour-way you're working to. With an Ivory jacket, a coloured flower gives a strong impact. For a Gold or Silver jacket choose something simple.

Traditionally the Bridegroom will chose a flower from the brides bouquet - his design will be the most impressive. For the Best Man/Woman a similar design to the Groom's as he/she plays an important role.

Dad's and Usher's flowers will be more subtle but still go with the theme. If you have a preference for Silk Flowers, some florists will hire the larger displays which can then be moved to your reception - saving you lots of money!

Displays - possible locations to consider

The Entrance

Pew End Arrangements or Bows

Font

Window Ledges

Pedestal Arrangements either side of the Nave

The Altar

Venue Ceremony
By holding your wedding ceremony at the same venue as your reception you gain the benefit of using the same displays in both the ceremony and reception rooms.

If you choose a floral arch for the ceremony and/or matching pedestals displays, they could be used as a great backdrop for the photographs and then positioned in your reception area to highlight Top Table, the Cake Table (especially for photographs of cutting the cake) or a dramatic welcome for your guests.

Large arrangements look stunning but can be expensive, so check if your florist can manage this or consider hiring a silk centerpiece.

Reception - Dress it up
Receptions can look dull but with the right floral touches, whether it's an extravagant style or elegant, simple designs, it's your dream and your florist can make it happen.

Wedding Top Table Suggestions

Dress your top table with a low, dramatic design to lead your eye to the Bride & Groom (with complementary arrangements for the guest’s tables) all add to the romance of the day

Candles in small vases

Single flower arrangements placed upright with trailing ivy

Garlands draped along the front of top table to soften the edges

Guest's Tables Suggestions

Silk flower with a candle will add extra interest

Single Rosebuds for the ladies on guest tables

Contemporary setting of Calla Lilies in vases

Vibrant Gerberas in coloured glass

Other Floral Suggestions

A Floral Arch will not only add impact to any room it will also create many photo opportunities

Buffet table designs need to be tall & striking

Decorate your cake table with garlands and bows - dress to impress

If you're limited for space, decorate the tables with overlay tablecloths in your favourite colour

Pick up more colour with chair bows on alternate chairs or just top table

Wedding Marquee Floral Suggestions

Some Marquee suppliers will have a contact for flowers but do your own research as well - check out other florists for alternative designs and pricing

Make the support poles for the marquee a feature by dressing with tulle, garlands or arrangements that drape from the ceiling

Gifts - for the guests who have helped make your day special, Silk Arrangements are an ideal keepsake.

A trained florist will make your day special with love and perfection in every design. Be realistic - is your hair straight / thick / long enough for the style you like? Select several photos to show the stylist at your trial and ask her to try each of them out. Be open to new ideas and any advice she gives you.

Should I wear my hair up or down?
Choose a style that will suit your face shape - round faces suit high "updo's" and sleek long styles, while long faces suit styles that have width and volume. Heart and oval faces suit just about anything - lucky you!

To determine your face shape, stand in front of a mirror with a lip liner in hand. Draw around the shape of your face onto the mirror. You may also have a combination of shapes - i.e... long and heart, or triangle and round, just to make things more confusing....

Would you be comfortable with all your hair pulled away from your face? Consider having some hair up and some down, or leaving wispy bits around you face to soften. If you have a low-cut or
off-the-shoulder dress will you feel comfortable with a little flesh exposed?

Curly or straight?
Once you have decided to wear you hair up or down, the possibilities are endless. Curls are soft and romantic, pleats are sophisticated & classic, braids are funky.... or perhaps you prefer more
contemporary spikes and twists. Try to reflect your personality in your bridal hairdo, whilst feeling comfortable with the style.

Tiara's and veils
These should compliment your hairstyle but not hide it. If you have chosen a large floor-length veil, your hairstyle needs to be sturdy enough to hold it's shape until you take the veil off.

Some veils look better sat at the back of the head under a mass of curls or a bun. If you have a French pleat (or chignon) it is easier to pin the veil in front. As a rule, the hair shouldn't be worn
longer than the veil.

Tiara's come in a variety of styles, make sure the size complements your hair-do, it is always wise to have trial-run with your hairdresser. Shop around for a good price as they vary enormously.

Beads, jewels and flowers
These are always popular as they add extra sparkle and colour and can tie in with your colour scheme and jewellery. Pins and hair-grips with sparkling gems in the ends have a stunning effect, whilst small flowers can be scattered amongst curls or wired to a comb to flatter a French pleat.

Pre-Wedding Trial
Always have a trial well in advance of your wedding. Your hair may need to grow longer or be coloured for your desired style, so you can always have another trial nearer to your wedding day. Have intensive conditioning treatments regularly leading up the your wedding day for that shiny, healthy look.

Wedding hair checklist
1. Have a trial run with your stylist as soon as your wedding date is set. If possible, take along a photo of your dress, and any headpiece or hair accessories.

2. Find out if you need to grow your hair length, improve the condition with conditioning treatments, change the colour or have some highlights.

3. NEVER shampoo hair or conditioning treatments on the wedding day; instead, wash it the night before. If you are wearing your hair up, secure it in a high pony tail at bedtime.

4. On the day of the wedding make sure the bridal party wear button or zip-up clothes. No crew neck jumpers! This will ensure you don't mess up your style...

Silk Wedding Flowers

Contibutor: Sue Webb
Sue provides silk wedding bouquets and other silk floral designs through her business, Ace Floral Designs

Why Choose Silk Wedding Flowers?
Flowers are an essential element for "the big day" so it is important to choose a fully trained specialist. Silk Bridal flowers play an important role in a wedding, with so many choices being available and trends moving towards weddings abroad or choosing a remote location.

Silk flowers are now of the highest quality and will give the appearance of real, particularly with the excellent choices in foliage now available, to compliment those flowers.

Each florist will have her own style of design. Therefore a little research is required. Check out florist's websites from the bridal directories and remember, many offer nationwide delivery so you could choose a florist out of your area.

Choosing a Style
Your florist has a wealth of experience. They will inspire you with their passion for their craft, whether it's silk or fresh, and in turn become a two-way relationship. They will need to know the details and shape of your gown, for example...

The style and any extra detailing, like pearls or diamante.

If you're having a tiara, what are the colour tones, gold or silver?

Many accessories can be incorporated with the flowers. So the information of the detail on your dress can be added to give your bouquet that extra special look. Your Bouquet will be designed to your specification and very much reflect your personality and taste.

It is important to feel comfortable with your chosen bouquet style. Therefore, with Silk Bouquets, you can try the various designs to see how comfortable they are and how well they match your specific requirements.

Here are just a few examples of the styles available to you...

Trailing Bouquets - ideal for the fuller skirt, a more traditional style with a modern twist can look very stunning - this is usually a wired design and easy to hold.

Posies - if you looking for a smaller bouquet, there all lots of choices in designs, depending on the flowers & foliage you choose - whether it’s the compact look of roses, or taking the basic posy shape and adding trailing ivy or bear grass to give it a more dramatic look.

Hand Tied, Arm Bouquets - for a modern, elegant look - popular choices are calla lilies with bold greenery or stems of roses bound with ribbon - this design could be scaled down to a small spray suitable for your bridesmaids.

Colour

Dramatic Shades - Reds, Oranges, Yellows, Magenta Pink & Purple

Softer Colours - Pinks, Lilac, Lemon & Soft Green

Natural White or Ivory with gentle accents of colour

Brides usually have a favourite colour they chose, or to compliment the bridesmaid's fabric. It can also depend on hair tones & complexion, especially if you are looking for a floral design for the hair.

Your florist will need to know your chosen colour and obtaining a swatch of material would greatly assist in obtaining that perfect match. If, for example, the bridesmaid's material is a strong colour you could go for ivory or white and try to add highlights of that colour with flowers, accessories or ribbon.

Flower Choices - Creating the perfect bouquet
Posies require small flowers for example, Roses or small Orchids.

Arm Bouquets have more impact when designed with long stemmed, elegant flowers like Calla Lilies.

Trailing Bouquets have a mixture of shapes with a few focal flowers to give that extra interest.

Here are some favourite flowers, by colour, to help you decide...

Ivory & White - Stargazer Lily, Roses, Rosebuds, Lisianthus, Gerberas, Lily of the Valley.

Yellow & Lemon - Roses, Calla Lilies, Ranculus, Lisianthus & Orchid.

Lilacs & Purple - Roses, Scabious, Iris, Delphinium, Lisanthus, Lavender, Bluebells, Sweet Pea & Thistle.

Pinks - Roses, Orchids, Gerbera, Calla, Lily, Scabious, Daisies & Hydrangeas.

Oranges & Reds - Zinnia, Roses, Calla, Ranculus, Anthuriums, Poppies, Gloriosa Lily.

Pricing
Always ask for a detailed quotation and don't be shy if you have a limited budget, your florist will work with you to give you the best available within that budget.

When you decide to book, you will usually be asked for a deposit to confirm your commitment.

afterwards

Get someone else to do:

Ask someone to return any rental items for you, including mens hire items

Have someone clean, press and store your bridal gown

Have someone settle any outstanding payments

Have someone email you some wedding photos so you can look at them on honeymoon

Do yourself:

When back off honeymoon, write and send thank you notes to guests for their wedding gifts

Write also to particularly hepful wedding suppliers and, where possible, write them a nice testimonial they can use with possible future customers

Have a great life together and whenever the going gets hard (and it always will!) remember your special day and your vows

on the day

The day/night before

The groom and best man should consider having a proper shave at the barbers shop

Best man should collect any telegrpahs or messages to be read at the reception

The bride and chief bridesmaid could have a manicure or spa day to relax

Don't try to do too much - spare your energy!

Make sure all the suppliers involved have an emergency phone number to call on the day of the wedding and that any mobile phones are fully charged &
